Meet Williams and Finch

Category: EventsRob @ 11:34 pm

It is time, once again to mention the next in amperSANDs long running series of talks on all things related to digital media. As usual the venue is the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea.

On March 5th Peter Williams of Tinopolis and Steve Finch of CDSM will be talking on the subject of interactive media and elearning content authoring tools. In particular Pedagogue.

Both Finch and Williams have great backgrounds in this area and their Biographies make for interesting reading. Unfortunately these are too long for Shared Creation; so click here for some detailed information about both them and the event.

I have a strong suspicion that the next event will be good.

A quick mention - Smug Mug

Category: Internet, Technology, Web SitesRob @ 5:56 pm

I recently heard about photosharing website Smug Mug and decided to take a look. I haven’t joined up yet, mostly because it is not free and seems very US centred. Not a problem for those of you in the states though.

So what is it?

Basically its another place to store photos online, and have them seen by many. What is nice to see - is a serious about backup. Photos are stored in three distinct locations and right up front you have an option to receive backup DVDs - that is a nice feature. There is also a bit of a focus on obtaining prints of your work on a variety of surfaces - not new but nice to see.

What really stood out was that Smugmug are seriously squaring up to the mighty Flickr. Offering a method of transferring all your pictures out of Flickr to Smugmug. I’m assuming that this is via the Flickr api’s. Right now with Yahoos future being a little cloudy and Flickr not making much in the way of cold hard cash (there are reports of Flickr being a loss maker for Yahoo), that is something that may gain the notice of the technorati. Personally I’d say - wait a little before jumping out of fear. Or at least size up all the alternative services first.  However having a migration saves you a lot of work.

I’m also going to quickly mention professional photographers. The pro account on Smugmug costs $149.95 per year but offers a lot of control on controlling your online galleries.

So what do I think? It looks interesting and I’d be more interested if I was in the States. It is at least another tool in the photographers arsenal. We also haven’t mentioned something like this in a while - so a welcome return to this type of website.

Beyond The Forest

Category: EventsRob @ 5:39 pm

I’ve just seen an invitation to the latest exhibition opening at the busy and always exciting Turner House Gallery in Penarth. It’s a shot full of mystique and hints and an older more superstitious  world.

All of which means I’m going to tell you a little about this exhibition.

The official opening is February 29th and it continues until the 13th of April

Its called Beyond the Forest and features work by Claire Richardson.

I’ve only seen 1 photograph - but I like it. Click here for the official write up about the exhibition.

POVRay Competition Winners

Category: Internet, NewsRob @ 1:10 pm

Recently the projects section of Shared Creation mentioned the POVRay cross platform ray tracing project. Now we have some news from POVRay.

POVRay has recently completed its 5th Short Code contest - to produce the best images from a scene description of just 512 characters.  The winners have now been posted and can be seen here.

Considering the lack of descriptive detail allowed these are great images.  Take a look. I hope you enjoy

This Week in Photography

Category: Internet, NewsRob @ 12:44 pm

Time to mention a new Podcast (only 4 episodes old as I write this), that should be right up the street of anyone trying to get the most out of digital photography.

Basically it covers what has been going on the world of photography and is a great place to get aware of products, ideas and tips.

It has a home page at: http://twipphoto.com/index.php/

Of course you could also download it via iTunes
