Stop the Cull
Cull what cull?
Fortunately it is of nothing cute and furry in the Arctic
The bad news is that it could be a cull of organisations funding the arts in the UK. There are reports of up to a fifth of all arts organisations losing their funding from the Arts Council.
This means massive job cuts and a loss of opportunity for anyone trying to get in.
So what is being done?
Well I heard about it via Facebook when I was asked to put my name to a group protesting this.
In case you’re wondering this is a dual story - both an expression of concern over cuts but more notably our first coverage of something happening on Facebook.
So lets take it as a given that arts cuts are not a good thing and will blight our cultural heritage.
Now we can move on to Facebook.
So far this group formed on Boxing Day - so it is very new doesn’t seem to be active. It is at this stage just a point to exchange information for this interested in the problem. Its existence though does prove that as Facebook gains members it gains the ability to be an interactive news service. Here’s the news - now what do you want to do about it. This is a step beyond asking you who is hot or not or saying the Ungrateful Sprouts are your favourite band. Its a tangible way to get involved.
So if you are interested in the arts, look this funding decision, look a the Stop The Cull group on facebook and wonder - what will do?
