A Look at the Uncanny Valley
The uncanny valley is a term spawned by Masahiro Mori a Japanese roboticist who theorises that as robotic and simulcra creations gain a greater level of realism then the greater the feelings of revulsion that humans will feel towards these non-human entities.
It is of course a topic often used in Science Fiction to examine morality issues with great success. Although of course Mori is no fantasist his work is based very much in the real world. It is now an also an issue of the moment. For although we don’t have these entities wandering around the streets; they do live in our screens. Making this something that artists and animators must deal with.
The Uncanny Valley is one of the core topics of discussion for Sand 2007 running between November 26 and November 30th. There will also be plenty else to talk about in this modestly priced animation conference that is going to make the point of covering all aspects of the industry from the creative highlights to the essential but less exciting aspect that is animation as a working business.
It’s going to be worth a visit.
