DPRK - Democratic People Republic of Korea
Between the 2nd of November and 22nd of December the Turner House gallery will be hosting an exhibition of photographic work by Phillie Chancel.
Does the title grab you? If not then perhaps this excerpt of the official exhibition blurb will tempt you….
Philippe Chancel’s crisp colour photographs produced in 2005 provide a clinical and detached comment on the monumental, political narcissism that the country operates under. Through his unobtrusive but persistent gaze, the photographer captures the all encompassing aesthetic of communist ideology as well as the finely orchestrated details of daily propaganda: a rare glimpse into an authoritarian state usually closed to Western eyes. DPRK offers us a chance to deliberate on a place not frozen in time, but outside of time, a place, literally, like no other on earth.
This exploration of a whole other place unlike anyother in the world sounds like a worthhwhile visit.
