Watch Out for Your Work

I recently came across this warning posted on The Register and felt it worth sharing.

The crux is this - on some web sites designed for sharing material - and in this case it is YouTube. There can be a problem with the usage of material posted. For although you own the copyright … you do grant for the site owners and successors a carte blanche licence to do what they want with the material posted. In other words, they can reuse it as they see fit without asking permission.

For the majority of people this probably isn’t a problem. YouTube is a fun place to network. But if you want to retain control of your creative material you do need to be aware of the possibility of it being used in other ways. You also need to check out the licensing agreements on other web sites too. For example Billy Bragg recently withdrew all his material from Myspace for this reason.
