Simplifications

Category: Development Blog, Shared Creation NewsRob @ 12:40 pm

Now that there is some operation in Shared Creation we’re finding it easier to improve it’s operation. Last time it was a separation in design between this Journal and the Projects section. Now we’ve simplified the interface on the Projects section. Trimming of some of the nice to have, but ultimately fat excesses off the sidebar. Or to put it another way the chat / announce box has gone. It’s presence was obscuring really useful sections such as the members area and tag cloud. So it had to go. We’ve also deactivated the forums for a while. The forums were designed for off feed chat. A sort of playground / sand box area. However Shared Creation is currently being redistributed by some heavyweight players in the blog world. So there is more mileage in good articles and comments than off feed chat. If the forums are needed or wanted, they can always be brought back.

The next phase of development is in publicity and education. The more publicity we get the more we can do. We also need to help users understand how Shared Creation can help them. The biggest point of confusion seems to be that it uses Shared blogging technology. It does this to allow multiple article originators to help themselves and each other. You can expect some articles here and in the projects section coming up to help explain this situation.

The good news is that with the feeds and work done so far we’re picking up an increasing number of page hits, readers and advertising clicks. So all is well on that score.

There is still a lot to do, but things are moving forwards, step by step. Just as was planned and wanted.

Meet Larry Mitchell

Category: Events, NewsRob @ 12:49 pm

Larry Mitchell is a digital media artist and producer from Florida. Examples of his work have been seen on Nickelodeon, ABC, and HBO. He’s also worked in diverse fields such as music video production, medical research, product design, and technology training.

Larry will be talking for amperSand on Wednesday the 15th of March in Swansea. For venue and other details click here.

This event shows the importance of convergence. Something that is big in the digital media field (and today that means Movies, TV, Internet, Printed Works, Radio, and Music), so just about all forms of art and communication are being affected by this phenomena. It’s also an important part of modern technology with lots of manufacturers desperate to graft lots of devices together - think of all the extra functions on mobile ‘phones these days. It’s an important part of the Shared Creation process too - where we invite people from varying backgrounds to interact to create something new. So from our point of view, and that of the world of digital media this looks to be an interesting event - that’s right on the pulse of what is happening now.

Myspace Film

Category: Articles, Reviews, Web SitesRob @ 5:19 pm

This is a review for Myspace Film. The section of the sprawling Myspace beast that attempts to repeat for film makers the success of it’s support for bands.

I should at this stage point out that I am not a fan of Myspace. I find it to be messy and very cliched. I cannot however deny it’s success or the potential it has for helping out new film makers. After all it has something in the order of 60 million accounts. That’s potentially a lot of people to talk to.

So onto the new film section.

It’s typical Myspace. Same layout. Same ideas.

So a bad review?

Well no. The film management section is brief and allows you to easily build up a profile of a movie you’ve made. Actually despite my earlier comments regarding myspace being a mess this seems to be well thought out. Allowing film makers to describe their role, their film and to advertise screenings. I ran into a technical hitch loading up a preproduction film. Every attempt was thwarted by an unforeseen technical error. After giving this a go over two days I can only report that there are problems in the system. However since other film makers have managed to load film details I can only assume this is either some sort of temporary aberration or a reaction to my non-windows PC.

So I went on to take a look at Myspace film from a fan point of view. At this point it’s obvious that everything that made Myspace the networking tool of choice for new bands is here for film makers. Given the success of Myspace with music and the current explosion in film making going on that has been generated by cheap digital cameras and editing suites I can only assume that this will grow into a vibrant area. In fact the films listed at the moment look really interesting.

My verdict. I need to know why I’ve hit some technical problems loading a film, which was of course - Consumed. If that is nothing more than a temporary glitch then the verdict is a good one. Whilst I’m still not that comfortable with Myspace - the fact remains that this is a valuable outlet and marketing tool for new film makers. My suspicion is that very soon we will be seeing mainstream news articles about some amateur film makers making it big through Myspace. The question I have is who will it be?
